Melasma

The main action of depigmentation treatment is to control the hyperpigmentation due to increased melanin production. It is a safe method that does not cause ‘peeling action’ being effective on all types of melasmas and compatible with all skin types.

What is melasma?

Hyperpigmentary (“darker”) changes to the skin of the face are frequent and consist of permanent and irregular deposits of melanin, which is the pigment that gives color to the skin. They may be located in an area (for example on the upper lip) or generalized, all over the face. This is called melasma and the variety of presentations and ‘forms’ it can present is wide.

Melasma is hormonally mediated (practically only affecting women) and genetically predetermined, so there are people who are born with a certain ‘tendency’ for it to occur.

What is the despigmentation made at Up Clinic?

The main action of despigmentation treatment is to control the hyperpigmentation due to increased melanin production. It is a safe method that does not cause ‘peeling action’ being effective on all types of melasmas and compatible with all skin types.

It consists of applying products on the surface of the skin that penetrate until they reach the cells (melanocytes) that are producing the excess melanin. Such products may need to be injected using small needles. In both situations the treatment is minimally invasive and leaves no marks.

It has the peculiarity of being a tailor-made product, as the different products are handled and used according to the specific characteristics of each patient: age, skin color, time of evolution, depth and location of melasma, etc.

Prior to the application of depigmenting products, we study and prepare the skin carefully. The treatment is neither painful nor ‘aggressive’ to the skin (it does not cause ‘peeling action’) and normal life can be done throughout the process.

What are the results?

Depigmenting may allow for rapid skin improvement but is even better over time as depigmenting products work in depth and block melanin production.

The skin becomes more uniform and luminous, with less “spots” and it is necessary to implement cosmetic measures according to each specific clinical situation.

It is also useful in acne or mixed skin to control oiliness and whenever a global facial rejuvenation effect is desired without too much aggression.
