What is Hyperbaric Chamber treatment?
The use of the hyperbaric chamber is the HBOT treatment (Hyperbaric oxygen therapy) and involves the inhalation of 100% oxygen at pressures greater than 1 atmosphere, which boost the amount of dissolved oxygen in the body tissues and causes a significant increase in the levels of oxygen in the tissues, namely from 75-100 mmHg to 200-400 mmHg.
What is its physiological effect?
The increase in tissue oxygen levels caused by HBOT (Hyperbaric oxygen therapy) induces angiogenesis and vasculogenesis, ie the formation of new blood vessels. In addition, it has an anti-inflammatory effect and promotes collagen formation.
Where and how is the procedure performed?
The treatment is carried out in a room at the Up Clinic in Lisbon in an individual hyperbaric chamber and always accompanied by a health professional (nurse or physiotherapist) trained in a hyperbaric chamber.
Hyperbaric chamber in plastic surgery
What is the relevance in surgeries?
The hyperbaric chamber has very significant benefits in the vascularization of the operated tissues and in their healing. HBOT can be used preoperatively to prepare the tissues that will be operated on and thus minimize the risk of complications. It can also be used postoperatively for a high performance recovery, in which a faster and more efficient recovery can be achieved.
HBOT proved to be efficient in the treatment of healing delays or vascular compromise of grafts or flaps in the postoperative period, by increasing the levels of hypoxia (low oxygen levels) that occur in these situations.
What surgeries is HBOT indicated for?
This therapy has benefits in healing and speed of recovery in all surgeries. In surgeries with fat grafts, such as buttock lipofilling or facial rejuvenation with ALL FACE, or in surgeries involving greater tissue detachment, such as Facelift, Mammoplasty or Lipoabdominoplasty; the benefits are even more evident.
Hyperbaric chamber in Smart Aging and Aesthetic Medicine
The benefits are multiple and multi-organic. Its application in Smart Aging should be highlighted, as its benefits in the pathophysiological pathways of aging are scientifically proven. It also allows the enhancement of other Aesthetic Medicine treatments, such as Facial Rejuvenation with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRPs).
Are there any contraindications to HBOT?
All HBOT treatments are preceded by a medical consultation to assess your clinical indication and your exclusion criteria. This consultation is carried out by a physician specializing in HBOT.
Is anesthesia required?
The treatment is painless and comfortable, during which the patient can watch television in peace or rest.
How long is each session?
Each session lasts from 60 to 120 minutes, and must follow the prescribed medical indication.
What are the risks?
They are minimized by the specialized medical evaluation in the pre-treatment consultation and by the follow-up of a health professional throughout the treatment. In any case, the risk of ear discomfort or barotrauma (due to pressure changes), oxygen toxicity and feelings of claustrophobia or anxiety must be mentioned.
Does the treatment include a single session?
The treatment plan should include several sessions to maximize results. This plan must be defined in a medical evaluation, according to the particularities of the clinical situation.
